Lauri Hokkanen grew up on Sugar Island which is located in the St. Mary's River below Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Lauri and Sylvia Hokkanen wrote the book "Karelia", which was about their experiences as a Finnish-American couple in Stalin's Russia. This took place in 1934-1941.
Lawrence married Sylvia Kuusisto, daughter of Frank Kuusisto and Ida Pihlava. (Sylvia Kuusisto was born in 1913, died in 2003 and was buried in Shingle Point Cemetery, Sugar Island, Michigan.)
