bullet  General Notes:

Levi Coller moved from Massachusetts to Alachua County Florida (St. Augustine) in 1812. There he met and married Nancy Dixon in 1814. In 1824, he and his family moved further south and were the first settlers in the area now known as Tampa, FL.

Additional Notes:
Levi Coller and his father-in-law John Dixon lived on Spanish grant land (Florida was not a state yet). In 1815 there was an Indian uprising and Levi took his family and fled to Alachua County, Florida. John Dixon was killed during the uprising. Levi came to Tampa a short time later for the salt air for his health (family tradition) and set out his stake. He returned for his family but when they came to Tampa Bay to settle, the army had already started to build Ft. Brooke, so he settled east of town. He spoke the language of the Indians and traded with them and served as translator for the army during peaceful times.
